ULEFUSA KEYSTONE Newsletter

This is the first issue of ULEFUSA KEYSTONE, our quarterly newsletter. I hope it becomes more than a collection of updates. Our vision is for it to serve as a clear signal of what is possible when the UETian community moves with shared purpose and a common vision. What you will read in these pages is not a list of intentions or future plans. It is a record of meaningful work already accomplished.

And we are just getting started.

Warm regards,

Engr. Waqas Khan (UET ‘80 Elect)
Founding Chairman, ULEFUSA

AI-ML Lab Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

On February 9th, 2026, a landmark ribbon-cutting ceremony for ULEFUSA’s flagship AI-ML Lab was held at UET Lahore campus, marking the formal commencement of the initiative.

The ceremony was graced by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir (TI), Deans of all faculties, Heads of all Departments, and Administrative Heads. Chairman ULEFUSA, Engr. Waqas Khan; Chairman ULEFPK Dr. Salman Iqbal, and representatives from leadership, including Engr. Niaz Siddiqui, Engr. Noman Riaz-ul-Hassan, Engr. Moazzam Chaudry, alumnus Engr. Ahmed Mukhtar, and Director ULEFUSA, Mr. Ahmad Ahsan were also present.

For ULEFUSA, this represents a strategic move toward building enduring institutional capacity. This initiative will transform philanthropy into a multiplier by enabling continuous innovation, strengthening university-industry linkages, and positioning UET Lahore as a leading contributor to Pakistan’s emerging AI ecosystem.

“I admire the efforts of ULEFUSA in supporting strategic initiatives aimed at modernizing infrastructure and advancing emerging technologies at UET. Initiatives such as the AI-ML Lab reflect the importance of building the technological foundations necessary for universities to remain relevant in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and digital innovation.”

Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir (TI), Vice Chancellor, UET Lahore
“The objective of this initiative is to create an AI lab that enables students - the ones that are here and the ones to come - to use artificial intelligence as a practical tool in their engineering education and industry projects. By providing access to modern AI technologies, we hope to empower students to shape the next generation of technological innovation for the country.”

Engr. Waqas Khan, Chairman, ULEFUSA
How It Works: A Partnership Built to Last

The AI-ML Lab will be governed by a formal partnership between UET Lahore, ULEFUSA, and ULEFPK, with an Advisory Coordination Committee and a Board of Directors with representation from ULEFUSA and UET Lahore. All intellectual property generated in the lab belongs to UET and its researchers. ULEFUSA intends to cover all operational and HR costs, ensuring that what was gifted remains a gift, not a burden.

Teaching a Nation to Think with AI

What started as a single cohort of UET students has become one of the largest free generative AI training initiatives in Pakistan’s academic history. Run in collaboration with Pak Angels US and i-Code Guru US, with recognition of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC), the program has proven its impact:

TechCAST: Where Engineering Meets Legacy

What if the engineers who shaped global industries could speak directly to the students who will build the next ones? That is the premise behind TechCAST, ULEFUSA’s flagship monthly podcast series, hosted by Engr. Waqas Khan (UET ‘80 EE).

On the first Wednesday of each month, a distinguished UETian joins the conversation, live on YouTube, to share their journey, their lessons, and their vision.

Faculty Consultation Session

A faculty consultation session was held at UET Lahore to map the existing AI and ML landscape across the university. The discussion revealed a strong base of ongoing work, including projects in public record digitization, security systems, and other impactful domains. However, these efforts remain fragmented and constrained by limited access to modern compute infrastructure..

ULEFUSA’s AI-ML Lab will provide the centralized, high-performance compute environment required to bring together dispersed research efforts and industry projects into a cohesive, collaborative ecosystem. This in turn will enable faculty and students to move beyond isolated experimentation toward sustained, high-impact innovation. Students will gain exposure to industry grade tools, improving both technical depth and employability. Faculty will be able to pursue ambitious industry relevant projects and partners will gain a credible platform for collaboration. This flagship project will also create pathways for student ventures, freelancing, and early-stage startups, embedding entrepreneurship within the academic environment.

Touchstone on Campus: Bringing You Back to UET

The Tocuhstone on Campus series connects accomplished alumni and global industry leaders with UET students, faculty, and researchers through structured, on-campus dialogue. The goal is to create a congenial environment where two-way conversations can take place with students in a dialogue format and to disseminate industry-based knowledge and insights beyond what is taugth in the classroom.

Session 01 | February 19, 2026
Engr. Moazzam Chaudry

The inaugural session was conducted with Engr. Moazzam Chaudry, who leads Product Management for Compute and AI/ML Infrastructure at Google. Over 50 students from Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and AI programs participated.

The discussion covered the evolution from GPU-centric computing to custom accelerators like Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), how companies like FireEye and ImagineArt translated real-world constraints into scalable products, and what it takes to navigate a career in competitive global markets.

Students raised substantive questions on translating academic projects into deployable products, pursuing graduate education in the US, global mobility and navigating readiness for competitive markets. They also discussed the use of AI in their projects; got problem solving advice, and developed an understanding of the product management cycle.

Session 02 | April 2, 2026
Dr. Nomaan Mufti

Dr. Nomaan Mufti engaged with more than 200 students, alongside faculty and representatives from the Technology Incubation Center at Main Auditorium, UET Lahore. Dr. Nomaan began the session by discussing his personal journey of entrepreneurship from an engineering lens. Drawing on his experience leading Industrial Partnership Projects (IPP-US) and the New Venture Contest (NVC), he emphasized structured pathways for translating ideas into viable ventures.

Dr. Nomaan highlighted how mentorship, competitive platforms, and access to capital enable early-stage innovation to mature into scalable solutions. The emphasis remained on solving real-world problems, understanding market needs, and executing across the full lifecycle from ideation to commercialization.
